From a 345mm city whip to a 2-metre outback broomstick — how to pick the right RFI CD or CDQ antenna for your vehicle, terrain and band.
Walk into any serious 4WD, farm ute or fleet workshop in Australia and there's a fair chance the antenna on the bull bar is an RFI. The CD family is RFI's vehicle antenna range — Australian-designed and built for our distances, our corrugations and our networks — and it's huge: from a 345 mm city whip to a 2 metre outback "broomstick", across 4G/5G cellular, UHF CB and commercial two-way bands. That breadth is exactly why people get lost in it. After supplying these antennas to travellers, farmers and fleets for years, here is the complete guide to choosing the right one.
The part numbers look cryptic but follow a system, and once you see it the whole range snaps into focus:
RFI's own engineering guidance is blunt about this, and it's the single most important thing on this page: lower gain wins in hilly terrain, higher gain wins in flat terrain. A low-gain antenna radiates a tall, rounded pattern that keeps working when the tower is above you on a ridge or below you in a valley. A high-gain antenna squashes that pattern flat toward the horizon — brilliant for reaching a distant tower across open country, and precisely wrong in the hills, where the flattened beam fires over or under the tower as the vehicle pitches. The 2 metre 8.5 dBi flagship on a hilly hobby-farm block is a genuine downgrade from the 700 mm model at half the price. Buy for where you drive.
All four current cellular models share the same DNA: 698–3800 MHz coverage (every Telstra, Optus and Vodafone 4G band plus mid-band 5G — including the vital band 28 at 700 MHz), RFI's patented Meander PCB collinear inside a fibreglass radome, a stainless spring base, 5 m of low-loss cable with an SMA male end ready for your router or Cel-Fi, and full ground independence — no metal roof needed, so they perform identically on a bull bar, bracket or boat. The choice comes down to gain versus length:

*A note on gain figures: RFI's headline dBi is the antenna's maximum, delivered at 698–960 MHz — the long-reach rural bands, which is exactly where it should be. Across the range all four models sit at 4.5 dBi on 1800/2100, 5.5 dBi on 2300/2600 and 6.5 dBi at 3500 MHz (5G) — the full band-by-band table is published on each product page. In other words, stepping up the ladder buys you rural 4G reach; city 5G performance barely changes. That's the right trade — it's the 700 MHz band that carries you when you're three hours from anywhere.
If you don't need the removable whip, the fixed-whip CD8194-B and CD8195-B deliver the same electrical performance for less, and the CD8294/CD8295 terminal versions suit fixed plant and machinery. There's also a heavy-duty spring option on the popular 7.5 dBi model — the CDQ8197-B-HD — worth the extra for corrugated-road kilometres. The whip on a CDQ carries an integrated N connector and screws onto its matching spring base. Undo it in five seconds at the car wash, the multi-storey car park, the garage door, or overnight in town for security — the coax, spring and mount stay put, and a $10 top cap weatherproofs the base while the whip's off.
The cleverer benefit: one base, several whips. Because the whip is the antenna, you can run a tall high-gain whip out west and click a short city whip on for the school run. RFI packages this idea as City–Country packs — the CDQ5000 + CDQ34 pack is the classic UHF CB example — and every CDQ whip is sold separately for later. Replacement spring assemblies come in standard (CDQ-SA7-B-SMA for cellular, FME versions for CB) and heavy-duty grades, so a tired spring or damaged cable never means a whole new antenna. Just match the family: cellular whips terminate SMA, CB whips FME, and the whip must pair with its own series' base.

Between the CD5000 (fixed whip), CDR5000 (removable, lighter spring — see the CDR5000 + CD34 pack) and CDQ5000 (heavy-duty Q-Fit), you're choosing build tier, not performance — same 5 dBi antenna, increasingly serious hardware.
Prefer a flexible steel whip that shrugs off scrub and low branches? That's the mopole side of the family: the classic CD63 (6 dBi, 800 mm, famously durable) and the elevated-feed CD961/CD963 (6.5 dB) whose feed point sits above the bodywork — the traditional truck and farm choice. All CB models ship with 5 m of cable and an FME end plus UHF (PL259) adaptor, which threads through a 6 mm hole — no drilling big holes in the firewall.
The two-digit CD models are the working end of the range — the antennas on ambulances, council utes, mine vehicles and marine fleets. They're ordered by exact band, which is the detail that matters: a CB antenna tuned for 477 MHz is the wrong part for a 450–470 MHz commercial licence. The splits we keep on the shelf:
Most ship as whip + base + cable combinations (MBC socket base or threaded stud), so fleets can standardise the base and replace whips. Two install rules earn their keep: mount the antenna as high and clear of bodywork as the vehicle allows (beside a headboard or behind a bull bar loop costs real dB), and route the cable away from pinch points with the slack coiled loosely, not bundled tight against the whip's base. Which one for my 4WD trip up the Cape? Mixed terrain says CDQ8195-B on the cellular side plus a CDQ5000-B for CB — and because both are Q-Fit, add the short whips later if city driving is part of your life.
Will the tall whip survive corrugations? That's what the springs are for — and why we suggest the HD spring or CDX-TREME tier for permanent outback duty. Any Q-Fit whip that does break is replaceable without touching the mount or cable.
Can I put a CB whip on my cellular base? No — whips pair with their own series' base (different tuning, different termination). One base, many whips works within a family: cellular whips on the cellular base, CB whips on the CB base.
Do I need a metal roof under it? No. Every model on this page is ground-plane independent — bull bars, brackets, boats and fibreglass canopies are all fine.
4WD accessory-brand antenna vs RFI?
